Quiet Riot - 10

Quiet Riot is a band who has been around for quite some time even having a number 1 album with their debut "Mental Health" but as years gone by their future seemed grim when lead singer Kevin Durbrow passed away. The next few years saw the band performing with a few lead vocalists with no new music to look forward to, That is until recently when the band released "10" now featuring Ex Love & Hate vocalist Jizzy pearl. I for one, was looking forward to this released only for the fact that i have seen Jizzy perform with RATT, and thought he did an outstanding job. The cd starts of with a song sure to be an anthem "Rock In Peace". The vocals are outstanding and the song is a catchy number. Can't help but sing along with it."Bang Your Buck" follows which is another uptempo rocker, parts of it reminding me of "Gimme Some Lovin" from Steve Winwoods "Spencer Davis Group". This is another catchy number which i found myself pressing the rewind button a few times." Backside Water" follows which is a moderate rock track and jizzy really knows how to take control, the band is in top form."Back On You" follows and grabs you and does not let go until your banging your head by songs end."Band Down" slows things down follow by "Dogbone Alley". The following 4 songs which end the disc are live tracks with Kevin Dubrow on vocals and not being much of a fan of live tracks, I would let the fans decide on their thoughts. Overall i think its a nice introduction to jizzy pearl and the future of Quiet Riot.

Chromeo - White Women

Chromeo is a canadian electo-funk duo i first heard on a canadian radio station when their single "Sexy Socialite" was playing. I was hooked after i heard their next single "Jealous". I then caught a performance on Palladia tv in which their Coachella performance was aired and i was really impressed. I presonally like the way they mix electro music with funk, which brings to minds bands from the disco era such as Earth,Wind & fire and other artists within the same relms. Their cd "White Women" is a fun piece of work. The cd starts of with their current single " Jealous" follow by "Come Alive" which features "Toro Y Moi". "Over Your Shoulder" brings to mind a song which could easily have been done by Chic, the guitar remind me of Niles Rodgers. The song which i really enjoyed "Sexy Socialite" follows which then "Lost On The Way Home" slows things down and sounds like a song which could have easily been released in the 80s. Overall the cd is a good cd which may take some people back to the 70/80s age of funk.

Chrissie Hynde - Stockholm

Being a fan of the "Pretenders" i was sort of skeptical to hear what Chrissie Hynde solo debut was to sound like because in the past, there have been some artists who rocked out and later on sort of gave in to boring non memorable songs such as Bryan Adams and John Mellencamp. When I did actually hear the cd, i was surprisingly surprise how good it was. Chrissie Hynde's "Stockholm" is full of memorable melodies and cool retro vibes. The 1st single "Dark Sunglasses" melodies sort of reminds me somewhat of "Night in my veins" from the Pretenders 1994 cd. The songs are well crafted and written.overall it is an enjoyable and solid cd. I have always been a fan of Hyndes attitude drenched vocals as well and 30 plus years in the industry really has not affected her vocals."Down the wrong" which has guest Neal Young on guitar is another fave track which has some great lyrics and Youngs notable guitar sound is evident on that track. Hynde slows things down with a beautiful ballad with nylon guitars and organ . "Stockholm" is one of Hyndes best work since the 1994 record "Last of the Independents". Fans will be pleased.

Redd Kross - Researching The Blues

My introduction to Redd Kross happened a little later than most, with 1990's "Third Eye". I always thought they had some great catchy punk pop gems such as "Annie's Gone" which brought to mind at times Cheap Trick meets Patridge Family. Next thing i knew the band had broken up. Only thing i heard from them was that Go Gos Charlotte Caffeys relationship to Jeff Mcdonald Researching the Blues, Redd Kross prove they still have a knack for shifting those component parts into fresh shapes. In just three and a half minutes, "Stay Away From Downtown" ping-pongs between vocal hooks and sticky guitar leads. "Dracula's Daughter" cakes on the Byrds-style "oohs" and "aahhs" to dreamy effect. With its power chord-driven teaser chorus and miniature slide guitar break, "Winter Blues" is the kind of song Weezer fans would gladly trade all of the band's post-Pinkerton records to get. Sometimes it pays to take a break, even if it lasts a little more than decade.

Romeo's Daughter - Rapture

Leigh Matty is one vocalist i still remember having a crush on when i 1st saw her on MTV in the early days with her debut single " Heaven in the Backseat" which was a song written by fame producer Robert Mutt Lange for Def Leappard, but was turned down by the band only to be picked up by Romeos Daughter, who picked it up and recorded for the Nightmare Of Elm Street 5 soundtrack. The band broke up soon after, after success eluded them in the states. Fast forward to the latter part of this decade and we see a reunion of the original band with a new release "Rapture", the titled taken from a biblical word. I personally think it's a great comeback record. Hearing the intro to the 1st song "Trippin Out" brings to mind the feeling i got when i first heard "Heaven in The Backseat" back in the 80s. The cd is follow by the first single released from the band "Bittersweet" which is a catchy moderate Album Oriented track which i found myself pressing back a few times to hear it over and over. " Cannot be the one" follows next which is a ballad , Leigh Matty's sultry vocals brings out the best of this track, "Keep Walking" starts with a catchy riff and with its catchy chorus, found myself singing to this song soon after. "Lightning" is another slower tempo number which i also enjoy with Leighs sultry vocals, " Alive" which was released as the second single, is a catchy number which starts slow and picks up to a uptempo chorus. I personally think in todays music world i was happy to hear a cd i can fully listened from beginning to end.

Vandenbergs Moonkings

Adrian Vandenberg may not be a household name but hes contributions are very well known having led hes own band in the mid 80s with "Vandenberg" then joining "Whitesnake" during their most successful period. Vandenberg then went into hiatus after the grunge period after a long hiatus which then see him arising out of nowhere with a new band appropriately titled "Vandenberg's Moonkings". Their debut cd is a refreshing comeback mixing alot of hes blues influences and nostalgic approach. Alongside the addition of lead vocalist Jan Hoving, Vandenberg keeps a close tie to the collaboration which most memorably established a name for himself as a musician by incorporating a compilation of evident elements from his nostalgic approach. Choice selections such as the solid opening track “Lust and Lies” and the blues-accented “Close to You” showcase a modern adaption of the classic ‘Slip of the Tongue’ sound. “Good Thing” introduces the solid addition of gospel vocal harmonies which compliment the gritty overtones of Hoving’s performance, just as we reach the album’s leading robust power ballad. “Breathing” implements a proper use of melody and string arrangements, and shows Adrian alternating between a delicate acoustic guitar and complimentary distortion. Later additions including the high energy “Steal Away” and the guitar oriented “Line of Fire” proudly display the chemistry between Adrian Vandenberg and Jan Hoving; neither musician can be found stepping over one another, however the duo set aside plenty of leg room for their own respective moments in the spotlight. Following the lesser yet still enjoyable ballad “Out of Reach,” we reenter the album’s high octane atmosphere with “Feel It,” a selection which reintroduces the durable addition of vocal melodies paired with an admirable execution. While it’s fair to say each track here is standout, one of the more exemplary moments on the debut is “Leave This Town,” which emphasizes upon the veteran songwriting of the guitarist which provides this group’s namesake. The weathered “One Step Behind” is a degree darker than the previous two ballads which found their way onto this debut, making for a refreshing change in attitude. This dynamic debut effort from Vandenberg’s MoonKings deserves a fitting conclusion, which arrives soon following the addition of the familiar sounding “Leeches” and the rock battle cry “Nothing Touches.” Two acclaimed members from the golden era of Whitesnake once again join forces on a newly recorded take on “Sailing Ships,” which shows Adrian Vandenberg teaming up with pivotal lead vocalist David Coverdale for an athletic revisiting which closely rivals that of the original. An authentic, modern take on classic rock is what listeners can expect find throughout the eponymous debut studio album from Vandenberg’s MoonKings. In addition to the hastily welcomed return of guitarist Adrian Vandenberg, the album is further fortified by palatable melody and superior musicianship which any established listener will be able to appreciate.

Night Ranger- High Road

This was one release i was really looking forward to when i saw their Epk video. High Road does not dissapoint and i actually see this release as my favorite Night Ranger Cd and one of my top picks of 2014. The songwriting is superb and with the addition of Eric Levy (Keyboards) & Joel Hoekstra(Lead Guitar)seem the band has gone back to the classic sound which won them many fans. This is a cd which should be blaring through your speakers when you are taking long drives. Opening track 'High Road' epitomizes the latter description and the early drive is maintained with 'Knock Knock Never Stop' featuring the brilliant shared vocals of Blades and Kelly Keagy. 'Rollin' On' is the heaviest track on the album and a throwback to the 'Neverland' and 'Seven' albums. 'Don't Live Here Anymore' could have easily appeared on a Keagy solo album albeit for the blistering guitar solos of Brad Gillis and Hoekstra. 'm Coming Home' again with its combined vocals is pure bliss and a real album highlight and I could see this featuring in future live sets. Gillis and Hoekstra duel frenetically throughout the whole album, highlighted on 'X Generation' and 'Hang On' that perfectly blend the old school sound with a modern approach. No NR album would be complete without the odd ballad or two and we have 'Brothers' and 'Only For You Only', the latter rating alongside some of their best. 'St. Bartholomews' is another heavy kick-ass track that contains more melody than most bands put into an entire album. The album concludes with the bonus track, the idiosyncratic, acoustic, instrumental '...Name'. overall one of my favorite albums of 2014 Night Ranger HIGH ROAD track listing: 1. High Road 2. Knock Knock Never Stop 3. Rollin On 4. Dont Live Here Any More 5. Im Coming Home 6. X Generation 7. Only For You Only 8. Hang On 9. St. Bartholomew 10. Brothers 11. L.A. No Name 12. The Mountain Song*
